Dedicated to creating a more peaceful, just and sustainable world by building individual and community capacity for effective global citizenship, we strive to develop people’s capacity for analysis, empathy and action to lead change on the issues they are most passionate about.
Calgary Centre for Global Community (CCGC) is dedicated to creating a more peaceful, just and sustainable world by building individual and community capacity for effective global citizenship. We are not an issue based organization. Instead, we strive to develop people’s capacities for analysis, empathy and action so that they can lead change on the issues they are most passionate about. In 2015, CCGC launched a new initiative called Humainologie which uses art as its medium for personalizing the roots of global conflict while at the same time increasing its existing audience by targeting all Calgarians, rather than just those interested in learning about human rights/global conflict issues.
Humainologie’s mission is to create and curate multi-media content (such as films, visual art, performances, and other forms of expression) as a way to remove barriers to human connection, to increase empathy for one another, and to stimulate individual ability and openness to make new connections and to deepen existing ones.
Without connection our ability as a society to exist in a peaceful and cohesive manner is weakened. The more we connect with others, the better able we are to understand and feel empathy towards them (Seppalla, 2012), our unconscious biases are lessened, and we significantly improve our real-world interactions (Dixon, 2011). There are also individual benefits to connection. People who feel more connected to others have lower rates of anxiety and depression while absence of social connection is a greater detriment to health than obesity, smoking & high blood pressure (Seppalla, 2012).
