Position Title:  Youth Volunteer Corps Program Assistant Internship


Start and End Date: Job incumbent must work 60 hours until July 31st, 2019 (hours per week may vary, though must not exceed 15 hours/week - schedule is flexible). The position may end earlier if the job incumbent reaches 60 hours before July 31st, 2019.




Youth Central is a nonprofit organization in Calgary with a mission to inspire, engage, and celebrate youth through community participation. We offer eight different programs to get youth, ages 12-18, involved in their community.


Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) is Youth Central's largest program. Working with over 100 nonprofit agencies in Calgary, we carefully curate meaningful, team-based volunteer opportunities for our 600+ youth volunteers throughout the year.


While serving as a Team Leader (primary responsibility). the Program Assistant may assist with tasks related to program innovation, growth, and development under the direction of the Program Coordinator and Program Director.


This job will be a mix of on-site, in-office, and at-home/remote work.




Team Leader (primary responsibilities)

  • Recruit youth through e-mail and phone calls for various community volunteer projects
  • Supervise and work with youth volunteers on community volunteer projects  
  • Liaise with the YVC Program Coordinator and community agency contacts
  • Foster teamwork between youth volunteers
  • Guide youth through icebreaker and reflection activities
  • Utilize the Youth Central volunteer database on a daily basis
  • Maintain and submit records of volunteer attendance and performance
  • Solve problems and manage crisis on site when situations arise

Program Support (secondary responsibilities)

  • Seek out and attend events to manage a Youth Central promotional/recruitment booth
  • Call Youth Central alumni to inform them about the alumni program
  • Call inactive volunteers to encourage them to get involved again
  • Solicit in-kind donations for Youth Central's Recognition Program
  • Help to plan fundraising initiatives for Youth Central
  • Generate a list of additional potential collaborating agencies/volunteer opportunities
  • Work with the YVC Steering Committee to complete their Garden Boxes project
  • Support the Program Coordinator and Program Director with additional tasks as needed



  • Must meet SCiP eligibility requirements
  • Experience working with groups of youth volunteers is a requirement
  • Experience facilitating service-learning and reflection activities is a requirement
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with different stakeholders: collaborating nonprofit agencies, youth volunteers, and the Youth Central team
  • Strong computer skills, including e-mail and database management
  • Friendly and approachable personality
  • Organized and punctual
  • Experience, knowledge, and/or trainings related to working with Indigenous communities and/or youth with disabilities is an asset
  • Flexible schedule and able to work some evenings and weekends
  • Must have Standard Level C First-Aid/CPR certification (or obtain immediately upon hiring)
  • A vehicle is not required, but would be beneficial for the job incumbent
  • Employment is conditional upon a successful criminal record and intervention check
