Silver Skate Festival is a winter festival held every February in Hawrelak Park. It is an extravaganza of art, culture, recreation and sports programming.

You will be joining a large team of hard working, fun people who put in long hours to bring this festival to life. Hanging out in Hawrelak Park is enjoyable. And bonus the festival feeds you the whole time you are onsite!

The majority of your internship hours are done during the festival dates of February 8-18. You will be outside most of the time.

You should expect to work between 60-80 hours. You must be available at least 6 of the 7 festival days (Feb 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18). Availability on the mornings of Feb 11-15 to assist with the school program would be an asset.

You must be able to get to and from Hawrelak Park during for your festival shifts.

From November to early February, you will have several meetings with staff and interns. You will also work from home emailing and phoning people who volunteer to sign up for recreation activities and help with volunteer recruitment.

  • Kinesiology
  • Health and Physical Education

Some specialized skills required:

  • Enjoy winter recreation and sport
  • Work well as part of team and on your own
  • Ability to work with children and diverse people
  • Ability to teach/lead recreation activities
  • Experience supervising volunteers an asset

What we will accomplish at the end of the Internship:

  • Help the festival production team in delivering a safe and enjoyable festival and school program
  • Follow up with volunteers who sign up to assist with recreation and assist the volunteer coordinator with volunteer orientation and training
  • Work with the festival team to develop a recreation plan including safety considerations, equipment needs, signage, supervision needs and volunteer training
  • Oversee recreation activities such as broomball, curling, hockey shooter, luge, ice slide, snow maze during festival (Feb 8-18) and coordinate/supervise recreation volunteers
  • Troubleshoot issues related to weather & volunteers
  • Lead & supervisor outdoor recreation activities for the Snow Daze School Program February 11-15.
  • Help the festival production team in delivering a safe and enjoyable festival and school program
  • Assist in recruiting festival volunteers
