Serving Communities Internship Program

NEWS UPDATE: Canada studenT SERVICE GRANT

At Volunteer Alberta, we believe in connecting youth with the Alberta nonprofit sector. Youth bring invaluable new ideas and approaches to enhancing our communities across the province.

As part of Canada’s response to COVID-19, the Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG) is an opportunity for post-secondary students or recent graduates to receive $1,000-$5,000 based on the number of hours they contribute between June 25th and October 31st, 2020 supporting a nonprofit in their community.

Traditionally, volunteerism does not involve financial compensation. However, we encourage both students and nonprofits to browse the website to determine whether the program suits their needs and interests. Alternatively, you can find other volunteer opportunities throughout Alberta on VolunteerConnector

The CSSG is responsible for providing support and matching students with nonprofits. You can find more information by reviewing their frequently asked questions (FAQ) and by browsing their website:

Update: Status of the Serving Communities Internship Program (SCiP)

We regret to announce that SCiP administration funding has not been renewed for the current program year (2019/2020). We value the partnership we have with our provincial Government and we are working with them to explore future partnership opportunities for the program.

If you are currently finishing an internship or have not claimed your award for the 2018/2019 program year, you are still eligible to receive your award.

We know how important SCiP is for post-secondary students to gain valuable work experience and for nonprofits to receive more capacity to achieve their missions. This is why we are working to diversify the program’s funding.

We will continue to communicate all updates regarding the program as soon as information becomes available. You can also get updates and stay in touch by following Volunteer Alberta on Facebook and Twitter.

We know you may have questions and we’re here to answer them. Please feel free to reach out to the SCiP team for any questions or concerns you may have.
